ABCGN_World: Iran's Rouhani warns of 'war situation' as U.S. sanctions resume

The United States says the measures are not aimed at toppling the government, but at persuading it to radically change its policies.

By Associated Press
TEHRAN, Iran — Iran greeted the re-imposition of U.S. sanctions on Monday with air defense drills and an acknowledgement from President Hassan Rouhani the nation faces a "war situation," raising Mideast tensions as America's maximalist approach to the Islamic republic takes hold.

The sanctions end all the economic benefits America granted Tehran for its 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, though Iran for now continues to abide by the accord that saw it limit its enrichment of uranium. While for now not threatening to resume higher enrichment, Iranian officials in recent months have made a point to threaten that could resume at any time faster than before.

The new American sanctions particularly hurt Iran's vital oil industry, a crucial source of hard currency for its anemic economy. Its national currency has plummeted over the last year, sending

Lawyer for Mail Bomb Suspect’s Family “Cesar Sayoc Found a Father in Trump”

The lawyer for the family of mail bomb suspect Cesar Sayoc went on CNN to paint the picture of a man who had long struggled with mental health issues and was constantly trying to find his place in the world. It seems he found something he was looking for in President Donald Trump even though he hadn’t ever been interested in politics before. “He was looking for anything, and he found a father in Trump,” attorney Ron Lowy said.

“He was looking for anything, and he found a father in Trump,” attorney Ron Lowy said., Cesar Sayoc, attorney

“He was attracted to the Trump formula of reaching out, Trump reaching out to these types of outsiders, people who don’t fit in, people who are angry at America, telling them they have a place at the table and it’s OK to get angry,” Lowy said. The attorney did emphasize that he believes this was a “motivating factor” and he didn’t blame the president “solely” because “this is a sick individual.”

Lowy said that it didn’t take long in his interactions with Sayoc to realize that there was something not quite right. “I began to realize that he had what I considered a lesser IQ, substantial emotional problems. He was like a 14-year-old in an adult’s body. He didn’t act like a normal individual. He wasn’t working on all cylinders,” he said. Sayoc’s family had long pushed him to get medical help but he repeatedly refused. This is a “sad result of someone who’s very sick, who didn’t get the help, became a loner, and then found a cause that adopted and accepted these types of people,” he added.

"Results" Would Have Been Far Better If Synagogue Had Armed Guards", Donald Trump, says

Speaking shortly after a deadly shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue, President Trump on Saturday said that if the house of worship had armed guards, “the results would have been far better.”

Asked whether gun laws should be tightened in the wake of the shooting, Trump said: “If they had protection inside the results would have been far better. This is a dispute that will always exist I suspect. But if they had some kind of a protection inside the temple maybe it could have been a very much different situation. They didn’t, and he was able to do things that unfortunately he shouldn’t have been able to do.”

Fed says the new NAFTA isn't going to help US dairy farmers

  • Federal Reserve Banks in the Midwest are reporting the renegotiated trade agreement between the U.S., Mexico and Canada is of little use to the dairy farmers President Donald Trump insisted on helping.
  • The Minneapolis Fed reported that "a substantial number of dairy operations have exited the business since the beginning of the year."
  • President Trump had pressed hard to get Canada to make concessions to American dairy farmers as part of the renegotiation of the North America Free Trade Agreement.

The renegotiated trade agreement between the U.S., Mexico and Canada is of little use to the dairy farmers President Donald Trump insisted on helping, Federal Reserve banks in the Midwest are reporting

Gains from the new agreement are seen as "too small and too far in the future to help dairy farmers," the Chicago Fed reported in the central bank's periodic report on economic conditions across its 12 districts.

The Minneapolis Fed reported that "a substantial number of dairy operations have exited the business since the beginning of the year." The report, called the "Beige Book," was released Wednesday.

Trump had pressed hard to get Canada to make concessions to American dairy farmers as part of the renegotiation of the agreement known as NAFTA, even threatening to leave Canada out of a tentative deal the U.S. had already struck with Mexico.

Before, U.S. dairy farmers faced strict import quotas and tariffs. Under the new agreement, which still needs to be approved by Congress, Canada agreed to drop restrictions, allowing U.S. producers to supply up to 3.6 percent of Canada's dairy market.

Even so, the Chicago Fed reports "dairy farmers continued to struggle," and Canada and Mexico kept their tariffs on pork, dairy and other agricultural products that they imposed in retaliation for Trump's tariffs on steel and aluminum products imported to the U.S.

Trump had hoped to boost GOP support among the farmers and workers in the upper Midwest for the upcoming midterm elections. Enough congressional seats are up for grabs to tilt the power back to Democrats, particuarly in the House of Representatives.

US: Seven children killed in virus outbreak

The death toll from a viral outbreak at a medical care centre in the US state of New Jersey has risen to seven children, with 11 more infected.

The strain of adenovirus at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation was "associated with communal living" and "known to cause severe illness", officials said in a statement.

The children affected were "medically fragile", the statement added.

The state investigation is ongoing. The centre is now closed to new patients.
