Brexit à la Grecque: negotiations turn into a chicken game

The EU will review its Brexit strategy if the UK fails to improve its offer to Brussels Donald Tusk said on Tuesday.

The statement by the President of the European Council comes as a response to a statement by the British Prime Minister, Theresa May, on Monday that Britain will only engage in talks if the EU is
ready to negotiate on future trade relations.

The “ball” is in the EU’s court, Theresa May said. On Tuesday, Michel Barnier answered that “Brexit is not a game.”

”We hear from London that the UK government is preparing for a ‘no deal’ scenario… The EU is not working on such a scenario, Tusk said. However, the President of the European Council made clear that the EU will have to plan for a “no-deal” scenario if there is no agreement in principle by December 2017.

Since the beginning of Brexit negotiations, the UK wants to negotiate its future trade relations with the EU in parallel with the so-called financial compensations, Northern Ireland, and citizens’ rights. For the EU, the framing of Brexit negotiations can only be sequential, with citizens’ rights, N. Ireland, and the financial settlement to be addressed first.
