These are the disturbing scenes that can be viewed all across China nowadays. The main cause for this absolutely inhumane situation? The lack of welfare laws towards animals – an open invitation to abuse animals without ever being punished.
The above image was taken in Yulin, Guanxi province in souther China, home of the infamous dog eating festival, which sees over 10, 000 dogs put down for their meat in just a few days. The dog in the photo is tied to a tree and pounded repeteadly with a shovel and other bladed objects. According to local people, the more the dog suffers before he is cooked, the better the taste. Basically this is all done to increase the ‘exquisite’ taste of dog meat.
In the background, a group of uncaring passers-by stand there and do nothing. Some of them are even enjoying this inhumane spectacle, eager to grab a bite to eat from the soon-to-be-cooked dog.
However, these scenes can be found all over the country, with very few exceptions. On many occasions even police officers themselves attack the dogs without remorse and without a sound reason (sometimes dogs are attacked because they are believed to carry rabies; others because they belong to homeless people or because owners failed to produce ownership and health paperworks upon request). Obviously, none of the reasons above calls for such extreme measures, but only comes to show the ruthlessness and the shocking lack of humanity towards animals by the Chinese.
I am truly disappointed that a country aiming to become the world’s global power treats animals the way it does. Mahatma Ghandi once said that the greatness of a nation can be measured by the way its animals are treated. When it comes to treating animals humanely, China has failed miserably!
It never too late to take action. We will never lose our hope that things can change in China.
