General strike against the pension system reform plans

The entire country has shut down for the general strike that has been called by GSEE and ADEDY in order to protest the government’s controversial plans for the pension system reform. The main rally was scheduled for 11am on Klafthmonos Square, while PAME held its own rally at Omonia at 10:30.

The latest police estimates indicate that about 60,000 people have participated in the demonstrations and rallies in the city center of Athens.

Public transportation will be affected by the strike and there will be no trolley, train or suburban rail services, while
taxi drivers have also announced that they will join the strike. The buses will operate between 9am and 9-pm, while the metro services will run between 10am and 4pm, however there will be no metro services to the airport.

All ships will also remain docked, as seamen federation PNO continues its ongoing strike. Olympic Air has announced that a number of flights have been cancelled, so travelers are urged to contact their travel agent or the airline itself before heading off for the airport.

Public hospitals, care units, health centers and emergency services will operate with security staff, after doctors and healthcare employees also decided to support and participate in Thursday’s general strike.
